monkton wyld court

Hey everyone, I just returned from a week at a wonderful place in Dorset.
Monkton Wyld Court is a fantastic gothic rectory set in beautiful grounds with gardens, organic vegetable and fruit gardens, free range chickens, performance spaces, communal rooms, food food and more yummy healthy veggie food. I took the kids to a family week, where we learned about sustainable living, by living in a sustainable environment....not one dull moment, seeing everything gently working around you has to be the best way to appreciate and learn! We took part in workshops including cookery, breadmaking, felt making, dancing, singing, puppet making, hot air balloon making, storytelling, bushcraft, face painting, theatre, fire shows, bat walks at night, drumming by day!
The community are so friendly and helpful, we really did nt want to leave.
I finished my week with an hour of massage......bliss!

I can't reccommend highly enough the wonders of a magical trip to Monkton.........even the price was amazing......ie adult full board including everything mentioned was £195 for the week.
There are workshops and events all year round, and you can also hire the place to do your own workshops with accomodation and food supplied. Or even just chill out with bed and beakfast packages...

We went off to fossil hunt too, and found lots of treasures!!

enough of my enthusing...here is the website.......
www.monktonwyldcourt.org

if you get the chance make a visit!
Or if you are into skills swapping give them a call, and offer your help around the house/gardens in return for the best hospitality!!

did plans and assembly ever get made for that tugboat sandbox? i have an 8 month old now and am looking for creative ideas for making a killer sandbox for my little guy...the motivation behind initiation of this group is refreshing...glad i found it and hope to contribute...with some enormous oak trees on my property, a tree house is inevitable...but first things first...gotta get this boy some land adventure prior to swingin' through the trees...any info on what it took to build that boat????

Hobbit Holes

I hope you will forgive my newbie naiveté, but what about building hobbit holes in the current climate. I live in a beautiful village, South Brent, Devon, England. And we are kind of taken with the idea of putting in some unannounced hobbit holes in some of the valleys and the glades for public access and shelter. Their obviously good for private property as well. Or if you were looking to build an alternative campsite where people stayed in tree-houses or hobbit holes that I'm sure would be a marketable hliday alternative. There is a company here in England that has jsut recently started doing this. When it comes to this kind of trend, we are normally behind you guys, but I thouight i would mention it. Check out http://www.highlifetreehouses.co.uk/ and click on the portfolio tab. Or check out http://www.stormbear.com/bagend2/index.php

Source for cheap Euro hinges, for your cabinetry projects.

Most cabinet shops press in 35mm hinges with this semi-automated drill and press called a blum press. It uses a screw on hinge with plastic plugs. Usually a shop has a dust bin of hinges without plugs from doors that have had to be changed or mistakes. These are to valuable to be thrown away, but the shop doesn't have time to mess with them. You can probably get the hinges you need for your project cheaply by asking around.

we'd like to build a solar passive, earthship-straw bale round thing for housing this Sept./Next spring. In our county you don't really NEED build. permits, hehe, so the plans are wide open. We have funding for the projects, but are looking for experienced carpenters who want new experience or want to host. . .an alternative building workshop for those interested.

We're located in N.East WA

Build a sea monster?

--Howdy gang; just trolling for ideas at the moment.
--I’m building an art car that will resemble a small pirate ship. For various reasons I’ve opted to build it around an offroad gokart, which makes it compact, which means it can be done by one or two people, as my shop seems to be located in an area where volunteers are scarce!
--In keeping with the "hope and fear" theme of this year’s Burning Man a pal suggested that, once I've finished my little rolling pirate ship (photos at www.nmpproducts.com/artcar.htm ) I could further conceal the lower automotive bits by wrapping them with a sea monster, whose tentacles would appear to be emerging from an EL wire "sea" beneath the craft and reaching towards the upper deck.
-Soooo I need to think how-to-build-tentacle thoughts. I can't sew, but I can work wood, foam, fiberglas and metal pretty well. Ideally I'm searching for a few volunteers who live in or around Santa Rosa, CA, with expertise in my voids, so to speak, to help me build something like a stuffed animal on a wooden armature, but sea monsterish and maybe 15 to 20ft long. Any takers? I'm willing to pay for all materials, but I’d prefer to swap labor for labor: I’m a machinist by trade and I’ve got a passing knowledge of welding, woodworking and a few other things. Any takers?

--I'm working on a "pirate ship"-themed addendum to my offroad gokart. I've got the stern done, thanks to timely arrival of a campmate last yr who is a contractor/electrician. But he's injured his shoulder and can't help me finish the woodwork on the bow. I've got a plan, I've got the tools, but I'm really a machinist, not a woodworker. Blog of work so far here: http://www.nmpproducts.com/artcar.htm
along with list of un-done stuff. If anyone's in the vicinity of Santa Rosa, please ping me. Maybe I could do a little kharmic balance via machine work? Thanks!

HI,

After reviving frm the sticker shock of the price of well contractors these days, ($10K) I found this:

http://www.hydratek2000.com/

and this

http://members.tripod.com/~Tetworld/phil1.html

I figure, if we get 5 people to buy in and help each other, it's practically free! Well, less than $1,000 per well, anyway.

PLUS - I heard from my longtime neighbors out there that half the wells in my area are HOT wells - is that cool or what?! Natural hot pool, anyone? I'm sending for hydrology maps to figure it out.

Feel free to pss this around. :)

hello all of you
i just wanted to put the idea out there and see what you all think of it ok
but first off i am tonia
secondly me and my bf have this house that he owns and needs some serious helps. the person who built it was a fool on wheel LOL
and we just need some help with up dateing a few little things
but we are goingt o have to wait till i get my social security before we could even begin getting matearials
this place is a tiny little ranhc home in illlinois but it does need some major help
like the plumbing in the tub doesnt even connect and the tub itself is very off it isnt level and doesnt drain like it should.
we also have a whole in the garage roof that we could use som ehelp getting done also. this garage is an attached an d it si slowly getting worse and worse towards the house itself
the elictrical needs updated also
i would like to have the yard fenced in for our kids and the puppy also. maybe a kool play area for the kids to play on that would really be a blessing. see we have 5 kids between us that dont live iwth us right now.
2 rooms of the house dont even have a furnace duct run to them yet !
i said the builder was a freaking fool LOL
anyhow i am very sick with huntington's disease and i dont get around very well and right now all of our mooney and energy seems to go into keeping me fed and my bf derrick spendsa lot of his time just trying to help me out with every day junk that i dont do well most otf the time
our walls in the house could use some help also
like paint here and there. and the living room has this veyr dark panelign that i would love to get rid of cause it has holes and scratches in it alll over the place.
also like i need to be in a great place like this to get around easier cause it is all on one floor and all
but man it is tough for me cause we really dont have room for our kids in this place either
if all of them cam e over for a week they ouwld have to share one rooom and the living room tooo
that is tough
we have plaenty of room on our little lot for another room or 2 to be added but that would veyr much to cashy for us right now
just an idea
let me know
my e mail is happytonia4@yahoo.com

Just for instance, in the treehouse workshop, we only completed a solid platform 20 foot up in the tree. We still have the other 2/3 of the treehouse to build. Wanna help?

Hey, anyone want to work on a treehouse on Sunday? We'll be at Claudine's, continuing that project, putting sheathing and a roof on the treehouse. It will be a good opportunity to learn the next step after wall framing. We won't need many people, so if you are remotely interested call me as soon as you can 408.218.2782

Rico

P.S. I also might be doing a little prep, putting tar paper over the whole structure on Saturday. So if you want to help Saturday morning, gimme a call.

I'd like to finish the guest shack in Felton before the big rains. They'll be free carpentry opportunities some weekend soon.

I'm looking for full-length sheets of 3/8" plywood for the sheeting. Also, looking for one-by (1x6 to 1x12) for the exterior siding and interior paneling. If you find or see any scrap pieces grab it and hold on to it for our next build day on the guest cabin. If you find a good bunch of recycled wood, tell me and I'll go pick it up.

Anyone have photos of the building of the guest shack?

Some friends and I just bought this place in Topanga, CA that sounds strangely like what we're all fantasizing about: treehouses, rope swings, hobbit houses, chutes and ladders. It's a 14 acre ranch and I think it needs all of you! ;)

soggy chickens need a coop

My 3 hens need a decent roof over their heads before winter. They got pretty soggy last year. We have a 6' x 9' by 6' high kind of rickety coop right now, with a tarp over the top. There are several banana trees and a wisteria vine next to/on top of it, which offer nice shade.

My vision is of a slightly larger coop with nesting boxes accessible from the outside, and a slightly pitched roof that also functions as a planter for strawberries (need about 6" of soil with drainage).

I'm open to other permaculture related ideas (multi-function) and aesthetic visions.

I live in Northeast Los Angeles.

i live in n. cal, where i get snow in the winter and LOTS of rain. i want to design or buy a kit to build a minimum of 15' dia. structure that i can live in comfortably, yet cozy for the winter. I can build a platform with a perimeter wall to increase my interior sq footage to make up for the pitched walls, etc. i'm looking into the budget friendly project, but i don't want to compromise too much. so many options...

2 desert cabins, Joshua Tree / 29 Palms area

Hi,

I have 2 desert cabins ('round here we call 'em shacks...) that could use the basics (doors, windows, electric). I've been trying to get the banks to lend on them, and may soon succeed on that, since the real estate's gone nuts around there since I bought them 2 years ago.

I'm open to anyone willing to swap cabin time for work, or, as soon as I'm successful with the bank, pay cash money. Since I'm hardly ever there, you could potentially do a lot of cabin-sitting if you want.

There's a full-on creative community in the area, lots of services, and a cool political network trying to halt mindless sprawl. (feel free to join...)

Each shack is about 20 x 30, with electric and phone avail. Cell phones work, also, neighbors nearby (not completely isolated.) One shack is near The Palms, a newly-trendy bar-restaurant seemingly in the middle of nowhere, where you can still get a decent burger for cheap. (And get a quart of oil for your ride - seriously, 10W30.)

I'm just thinking of upgrading each place to the cozy-cabin level. Each shack has good framing, though one needs more rehab than the other. I figured, fix the easy one first, then that one's avail while fixing the other.

Just putting it out there. It's sort of hot out there now, but, well, whenever you happen see this, feel free to contact.

Would any of you'all be able to rip about 500-1000 quarter inch slats out of 2x whatever material in lengths of 4'-12' ??? Also looking for bamboo, river willow....READ BELOW FOR DETAILS!!!

@@@@@@@@@

We are creating an amazing project for Burning Man
this year...an
instillation called MINDWEAVE...

It will be a state eliciting space designed to
induce peaceful
awareness...email if you want details or want to get
involved!

The reason I am writing this is that I need to
gather a large amount of
flexible bamboo, river willow, and other such organic
materials between 4-12 feet
in length to create the space by weaving a twelve
foot dome! I am aware
that bamboo some times goes wild and needs to be
cleared so if you have any
or know someone that does, PLEASE let me know....I
need about 500-1000
pieces!!

New musicians/artists warehouse needs some carpentry help! (framing, lofts)

Hello folks - I'm a part of a new musicians/artists warehouse in Oakland, and we are looking for some people with solid carpentry skills to lend us a hand building out some of our spaces. We certainly have the energy to build - but not neccesarily the experience to do it safely and well.

We have about 12,000 square feet between 3 units, and really just need some help framing a couple walls (which we should be able to do ourselves safely), but also with construction a few loft/mezzanine spaces, with stairs. We want this done right and safely - but also don't have a whole lot of budget - so trying to keep costs/materials as low as possible...

The building is amazing - several retail storefronts (a cafe/bookstore opening on one side, and a clothing/design/crafts store on the other), 2 performance venues, recording studio and ??? Work-trades are possible too - we have a room or two that could be a living space, as well as access to other projects in the building - we don't have much money, but do have other resources we can share.

Anyway have a hand to help?

Hello...
I am planning on living in a diesel engine bus that I will run on used vegetable oil... It will be my primary home... so it will be very important to make it as space efficient as possible... I will pay for all materials needed and have some furnishings and ideas that might work... I am posting this to see who and how many people would be interested in donating thier time and skills to this project... I am located in San Jose but am willing to travel anywhere in the bay area once I find the right vehicle... that's right I don't have the bus yet... sooooo if you know of a diesel bus or shuttle like bus or box van for sale let me know the dealyo ;)
thanks...

How to post possible projects?

So I was wondering, since I have a couple of possible projects, what would be the best way to go about it? I was thinking a picture/drawing would be a great start posted to the tribe and then a description of what would be desired. That way, others could comment with possible suggestions and there would be a good idea of the scope of the project.

What do you all think?

I just thought this group might like to see my project. If you look in my profile photos you'll see some pics of the sandbox play boat that I designed and built last summer.

It has a working fire hose and periscope. The aft deck slides off to reveal a large sandbox. It also has a hatch in the bow that they can climb through. The railings are painted copper plumbing pipe and the portholes are brass toilet flanges. I kerfed the planks to bend them to form the hull.

I was very simple to build and I'm working on plans/assembly instructions now.

I had fun building it and my kids love it.

Free Retirement!

Because this tribe is roughly based on gift exchange economy, I would love to hear people's ideas for retirement and geriatric care gifting and how that could relate to this. Can we gift our way into retirement together? What happens (as it often does to carpenters) when our backs go out when we're fifty? Who can gift us our needs when and if we need a lot of medical care?

What if we gifted carpentry to retired people that can't afford it and established a network strong enough to do it for us?

Sorry if this is off-focus, but it's my main barrier to a more free carpentry lifestyle.

Waterbed design

Hi guys,

Need some pointers, thumbs-ups, opinions, whatever.. I've assembled waterbeds before, no problem, I've just never designed one.

I've done up some basic schematics here:
http://members.fortunecity.com/cynewulf/woodworking/wbimages.html

Is the cheap stuff from Lowe's or whatever sufficient for the internal structure? I'm thinking that's usually pine or something?

As far as the visible wood goes, I don't want anything too fancy or exotic (read: expensive) but I would like it to look nice with an oil and wax finish.

Also, for anyone who's built or familiar with waterbeds, there's a groove on the inside bottom of the head and foot of the upper frame, that holds the liner and matress. Can anybody tell me what the heck that's for?

Ok. so i bought a loft bed that was too big for the room i am in. so now i have piles of wood laying around my room. i am trying to get back what i bought it for or (hopefully) trade someone for a smaller loft.

then i stumbled upon this tribe.

i would love, if i could to convert the materials i have now into a sturdy, twin-sized, loft. i had thought about this already, but my carpentry skills are very limited. ( took woodshop in high school)

thank you very much, all you beautiful people.

hey ya'll! great to see this tribe growing- and in the interest of keeping it cohesive and easy to use, i set up a thread exclusively for listing your skills. without discussions and ramblings (all well and good in other threads..) "artisans toolbag" can function as a primitive database where giftees can find local artisans and artisans can find their fellows.
i also expanded the description, giving a fuller description of freecarpentry and refining the function of this tribe.
next up is "how to start freecarpentry in your area" and "killer websites" and "i overuse qoutation marks and hyphens and parentheses and semicolons"

Stuff you own vs. the place you make home

Our vision of free carpentry was to work with people to create spectacular places. Living places where people live and work and play and truly exist. Treehouses, gardens, studios, barns, strawbale and cob houses, secret sitting spaces in the wild forest, playgrounds for children and adults, that kind of thing.

While we all own stuff, and fill our homes with stuff that means a lot to us. And some of that stuff, furniture, beds, cabinetry involves carpentry, isn't truly our cup of tea.

(The moderator will likely remove threads that wander too far from that vision of free carpentry. No offense is intended, of course. It's our fault for not being more specific.)

There are DIY lists to help folks do-it-yourself cabinetry, carpentry, fixing things, etc. Here are some (hopefully) helpful tribes, you can track down:

DIY - do it yourself - http://do_it_yourself.tribe.net
Fine Woodworking - http://finewoodworking.tribe.net
Japanese Carpentry - http://japanesecarpentry.tribe.net
Handy Grrls - http://HandyGrrls.tribe.net
We Fix Stuff - http://fixit.tribe.net
home repair and improvement - search for it

And this is just for starters, using tribe search for a few minutes.

On the other hand, if you need help creating a very special place, a home, an office, a place to play, post a note in Free Carpentry. If you have skills to share, post a note in the skills section and tell everyone want skills you have and where you live.

Started thinking about applying the idea of the gift economy to real life this year after coming back from Black Rock City. A friend and I started thinking, well, why the hell not and clearly it has to start with us. So we started giving away what we do, carpentry and art. It totally transformed our relationship with our work.

Today, we met three different interesting people who were interested in receiving free carpentry work. It was total pleasure meeting them and seeign their lives, their homes, and talking to them about their dreams. Maybe one out of the three will we ever build anything for, but she was an amazing woman who lived in a house built from old wooden streetcars. And she wanted us to build a treehouse in a great old oak tree. Wow!

non profit jobs?

would we consider free carpentry for a non-profit, maybe... its not about charity, and thats come up with many prospective clients; we'd almost prefer to do it for someone who could afford it over someone who couldnt.
its about finding projects where people are ready to let go of societal standards, where we as artist-carpenters can let our most fantastical visons loose; pouring our soul out, doing what we love, and offering it as a gift. as charity, it might not be as well appreciated- gifts can be taken for granted and thought of as staple in that arena. but what disheveled dot-comer or magnificent millionairre would ever expect to receive a gift as large or spectacular as a treehouse or a timberframe cabin with a fieldstone chimney and wattle-n-daub walls?-- and how do you think that might influence their interactions with others?
thats what we're most after. yea, we get to have a lot of fun, meet new people, share skills, explore new techniques and not worry about bidding. but the opportunity to show someone that a stranger could give their all, just in the interest of sharing... this is just one of our litte ways of infusing happiness and interconectedness into the social mindframe.

ol' rico thunder and i were zoomin down graham hill on the way to a jobsite, revisiting and exploring a perennial dream of ours- combining our artistic goals, building skills, and desire for community development and gradual dissolvement of monetary-based trade.
so why not give our ideas and skills freely and just see what happens?

its blowin us away... a great response from builders and owners alike, even creepin out of the santa cruz area where we started.

so we put up this tribe to attract more folks, spread ideas and share experiences.

I have this design in my head for a 60" long case for my rack mountable music harware. I have a few tools (circular & reciprocating saws, etc.) I've built some sloppy speaker enclosures when I was a kid. I need help either building it - I pay - you build or just tons of tips on light, sturdy wood selection, getting tight corners, recessing handles, etc... most of this comes naturally to me, I'm just tired of thinking about this idea - time to manifest it!

Peace!

BTW: Great idea for a tribe and good karma points! Kudos!
