Sandbox play boat

topic posted Thu, January 20, 2005 - 7:51 AM by  Mike
I just thought this group might like to see my project. If you look in my profile photos you'll see some pics of the sandbox play boat that I designed and built last summer.

It has a working fire hose and periscope. The aft deck slides off to reveal a large sandbox. It also has a hatch in the bow that they can climb through. The railings are painted copper plumbing pipe and the portholes are brass toilet flanges. I kerfed the planks to bend them to form the hull.

I was very simple to build and I'm working on plans/assembly instructions now.

I had fun building it and my kids love it.

Dang, Mike. You seem like a handy guy.

I can't wait until people start building playgrounds for adults! What would it be like? Swings that towered to the sky. Things to climb high up. Rope bridges, tree houses, zip lines.

But people's -- nay, modern society's -- paralyzing caution kills me. How to get around that in our litigious society, I don't know. Maybe signs that said, Danger! Keep out! Adult playground! You could very well die playing here! And you probably will!

Are you going to start doing free carpentry in Phily?
