i live in n. cal, where i get snow in the winter and LOTS of rain. i want to design or buy a kit to build a minimum of 15' dia. structure that i can live in comfortably, yet cozy for the winter. I can build a platform with a perimeter wall to increase my interior sq footage to make up for the pitched walls, etc. i'm looking into the budget friendly project, but i don't want to compromise too much. so many options...

Fri, August 26, 2005 - 6:23 AMHave you considered a log house, not from a kit though? At first, it seems like it's a wasteful use of trees, but actually there is less waste from the tree compared to milled lumber. It is more effiecent to heat and cool. Some log houses have lasted more than 1000 yrs and are still usable. There are many reasons why it is actually a more friendlier way to build.
There is a great class you can take in Monroe Washington that will teach you a butt and pass method using the trees from your own property. The website is www.loghomebuilders.org . I took the course several years ago and stand behind it whole-heartedly.
Good Luck.
