we literally have had an overnight response here on this tribe.
i'd like to know, from you who have joined, what skills and interests you have right now, and what you'd like to develop.
also, it'd be interesting to find out where you'd like to see the fundamental ideas of free carpentry ideas travel to / applied.

Re: our collective skills?
Wed, December 29, 2004 - 12:09 PMHmm, let's see. I do this professionally (as in make money doing carpentry). Here's what I brag to coustomers that I do:
I work in Santa Cruz, San Lorenzo Valley, Scotts Valley, Capitola, Aptos, principally. That's all in Santa Cruz County. Though for a very kick-ass free carpentry job, I could be lured out of my cozy area.
General construction, new building, repairs, finish work, doors, windows, electrical, floors, roofs, decks, tile, drywall, painting, networking, telephone.
As well as a ton of interesting specialty stuff I'd love to help with: treehouses, garden gates, straw bale and cob building, hidden forest retreats, lofts, interesting fences.
My fantasy is that someone wants me to help build a Erok village in a grove of tall old redwoods on their property. Oh man. With rope ladders and cable bridges and porches and decks and rooms scattered about in a dozen trees. Can we get that? Can we? Can we, Seanix? -

Re: our collective skills?
Wed, December 29, 2004 - 12:27 PMyes, we can wes.. the ewok village has been a dream of mine for a long time, well, since i saw it back in 83. and quite honestly, it's highly influenced my asthetic. heck we could build it in a forest, or a backyard, or the urban forest even-- imagine huts on stilts on urban rooftops with a network of footbridges (youve seen the vast expanses of barren warehouse rooftop space from a plane, eh?)
rope swings and catwalks and pulleys and spiral steps and all things gnarly&twisted and message chutes and slides and tunnels and arararrrar!
someone, somewhere, has trees or roofs that they've always wanted this type of attention given to. and we will find them, wes.
know why? cause i believe... -

Re: our collective skills?
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 3:43 PMAlright! I think your tribe rocks! Learned of it over at the Santa Cruz tribe and ran on over to check it out.
By way of introduction, live in Boulder Creek, am an amateur mason (did some professional work but mostly do it for myself now), good with a hammer but not a trained carpenter, have done plumbing, radiant floor etc, done some solar design etc, and basically am a handy person to have around.
Soooo...I can help....and by the way, the Ewok thing, really, really dig it, and maybe I can help with the location.... -

Re: our collective skills?
Mon, January 3, 2005 - 4:12 PMI do plumbing mostly. And this is centered around
water heaters and water supply piping. I do a lot of gas piping. I also have some basic carpentry skills. I'm studying water treatment right now, this includes both waste water and potable water supplies. I'd like to develop a better knowledge of chemistry and how it applies to water.
I joined to watch how this project goes and if there is some incredible project I really want to learn or do I am totally interested in donating labor.
Rico, Seanix, if you want running water in the ewok village we'll need some good method of either storing it in the trees or pumping it up there. -

Re: our collective skills?
Mon, January 3, 2005 - 4:21 PMpeople could have minimal plumbing fixtures in their houses. Might be a good idea to think of fire protection. We could have a well with a storage tank up on a hill side nearby, but at a higher elevation than the treetops. This might give adequate pressure. It would at least lessen the load on a booster pump.
rainwater catchment would be essential but storage would be limited by the strength of the structure because it is so heavy. Could we span clear plastic between the tres to catch water but also let sun through? We would have to make sure that the trees got enough water, too, or they would die and houses would fall. -

Re: our collective skills?
Mon, January 3, 2005 - 4:25 PMWe could spinlights into the plastic sheeting and it could be at a height below the greenery of the trees. We would have to manage leaf fall onto it to keep out the shade. It might help us create a tropical microclimate at groundlevel though by trapping heat and moisture. maybe I've gone too far with this. Is there an ewok village tribe?

Re: our collective skills?
Tue, January 4, 2005 - 3:37 PMHello all, great idea for a tribe. I am a professional remodeler in Pennsylvania. I am what they call a jack of all trades, master of most... I do carpentry(both framing and finish) a lot of plumbing, heating, electrical, drywall, welding, pipefitting, and right now I am currently looking to get started, and further my knowledge, in the radiant floor heating feild. This is not a new thing to Pa, but is a possible, ever expanding, endever. ~Bob -

Re: our collective skills?
Thu, March 3, 2005 - 12:00 PMhey, tmaas here from Santa Cruz. I am a twenty plus year finisher/painter, and love to tithe in the way of consulting to actually splashing the stuff on when time allows and it seems appropriate. I have been doing really high end furniture or instrument grade finishing for the past 15 years so I have a lot of background in problem-solving stain and lacquer issues. I also create exotic wall finishes(no I don't use sea sponges...Eighties). But I do devise crazy ways of increasing the overall aesthetic of the home or business. ok?
what now?

Re: our collective skills?
Tue, March 8, 2005 - 12:29 AMHey, new here. I've got mad skills. Jack of most trades. If I can't do it I'll learn quick. Worked in a lot of different areas in normal construction but also on scenery for movies and tv. I'm in Seattle area right now but soon to be back in Hotlanta.
I'm interested in learning about solar design and sustainable construction. Lately I'm starting to feel a little guilty everytime I slice into a new 2x4.

Sun, January 15, 2006 - 1:57 PMUsed to do random rural carpentry, have built a few indoor lofts; did the 2 or 3 week "owner-builder" class at Heartwood School in Great Barrington MA back in, um, 1988 on designing and building energy-efficient homes.
And have a lot of my own tools. Would like an excuse to use 'em more often! -
