Because this tribe is roughly based on gift exchange economy, I would love to hear people's ideas for retirement and geriatric care gifting and how that could relate to this. Can we gift our way into retirement together? What happens (as it often does to carpenters) when our backs go out when we're fifty? Who can gift us our needs when and if we need a lot of medical care?
What if we gifted carpentry to retired people that can't afford it and established a network strong enough to do it for us?
Sorry if this is off-focus, but it's my main barrier to a more free carpentry lifestyle.

Re: Free Retirement!
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 5:13 PMHi,
I have 2, separate, 5-acre parcels in the Joshua Tree / 29 Palms area.
Be glad to exchange cabin time / cabin-sitting for carpentry help. Both cabins are near power lines and easy to reach via simple dirt roads. No drama.
Each of these parcels has a shacky-cabin on it. One cabin just needs the basics re-installed (2 doors, some glazing on windows, fix(simple) roof) - to retrun it to cabin-level fun.
The other cabin is less intact, but most of the basic framing is sound.
Both are concrete slab, about 20 x 30.
Later plans include: art community. :) (There are lots of other artists & musicians in the area as well.)
Cheers,
jewel (L.A.) -

Re: Free Retirement!
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 7:14 PMHa, is this in this thread because you are thinking of tiring out to the desert years from now?
Well, I'd certainly be happy to sit out in the middle of Joshua Tree near your cabins anytime you like. But no exchange, trade, or barter neccessary.
It'd be fucking cool ass to come help you for a weekend fix up your cabin. Might even draw a handful of free carpenters from the Bay Area and LA.
Sounds fun! Wanna call a date with several weeks (maybe a month) ahead of time in the spring? Then as the date gets nearer, get committments from free carpenters who'd be willing to truck it out there for the weekend.
When I do free carpentry, the homeowner usually pays for materials. In this case, since it is a ways away, might be a fine thing if you go out there semi-regularly, to start stockpiling the materials you think we'd need and then some. That way when carpenters got there, they could get right to work.
