We gravitate towards projects like treehouses, barn-raisings, custom doors, interesting fences, garden gates/arches/arbors, interactive sculptural sitting spaces, stone/brick/broken concrete paths/walls/garden beds, straw bale and cob,post-and-beam timber frame structures, native landscaping, forest restoration, playgrounds for adults and children, hidden spaces, creative decks, ecologically safe/sustainably harvested or reused/recycled materials...
In the creation and construction of innovative, integrative living space, we want to combine our artistic goals, living experience, building skills and specialties to actualize our desire for community development and gradual dissolution of monetary-based trade.
We live in a world that has given a lot to us, and we want to give something back. We do this professionally, and it's the best way we know to share what we love to do. it's not about charity; this is our gift to our community and to ourselves, and a way to get involved in interesting projects where people are ready to let go of societal standards, where we as artisans can let our most fantastical visions loose, pour our soul out, share what we love, and offer it as a gift. it's one more way of infusing happiness and interconnectedness into the social mindframe. ideally this concept will spread geographically, and even greater- across trades and abilities.
What if, as an artistically inclined carpenter, you were to find someone who offered a project that enlisted all your most treasured skills and tricks, that tickled you to figure out how to expand your knowledge and courage in how you use your tools and noggin and informational/material resources.. and you could give the finished product to that someone with no expectations of return? it's very cathartic, much like incinerating art, yet your art lives on and influences and reverberates.
Freecarpentry tribe exists for artisans to make their skills and dreams known, so that a perfect project can find its perfect creator. we've found such projects, and they've totally transformed our relationship with our work.
Post your skills/interests/dream jobs and your location/contact-info in the "artisan's toolbag" thread, so potential giftees can find the carpenter of their dreams, or gifters can pool a workforce...
